What’s the Right Facial Treatment for Me?

January 2, 2019 by Davis

With a steady stream of advances comes a broader range of options for a host of cosmetic procedures. Two of the more popular facial treatments at Davis Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, for example, tend to appeal to different kinds of people, but they both yield great improvements in both the texture and the pigment of the skin. So which one’s right for you? Let’s take a closer look at them.

Facial Before After

Look years younger in 24 hours
HALO is fast becoming the future of laser resurfacing. The treatment itself is virtually painless and the recovery time is minimal.

This is how it works: Ablative fractional resurfacing is a well-established treatment that vaporizes aged tissue with less thermal injury. But the recovery time and side effects can be mild to moderate. By contrast, non-ablative fractional resurfacing causes thermal injury, but the side effects and recovery time are fairly minimal. HALO is hybrid of both, maximizing the desired results while minimizing the recovery time.

HALO’s been shown to effectively improve the appearance of lots of common skin conditions, like wrinkles, discoloration, and looseness, that can result from long-term sun exposure, an active lifestyle, and the basic wear and tear of everyday life.

Patients treated with HALO have seen powerful results in just one to two treatments, while older technology would have required five to six for the same degree of improvement. In most cases, only a topical anesthetic is used, and patients can apply makeup within 24 hours of their procedures.

Essentially, come in for the treatment on a Friday and be back in the office Monday, turning everyone’s heads.

Calling all early adapters
The platelet-rich plasma facial is a bit more invasive than HALO, but the potential benefits far outweigh the minimal discomfort for those early adapters who’ve come to swear by it.

Platelet-rich plasma isn’t brand-new concept, but we are just beginning to appreciate its full power as a rejuvenator and all the ways it can be applied. I’ve come to think of it as the gateway to learning about the body’s true rejuvenating abilities.

Google platelet-rich plasma facial and you’re going to come up with a bunch of entries about the “vampire facial.” Don’t be scared away. It’s just a nickname that grew out of the blood we draw for the procedure, which is harmless. Here’s a quick overview: We draw blood from your arm, separate the platelets from the red blood cells in a centrifuge, then inject the platelets into your skin via microneedling. In other words, I’ll run a needle pen over your face while squirting the platelets into the tiny injection holes.

A couple of things are going on there. First, the platelets are high in growth hormone. Second, the microneedling stimulates the skin to regenerate. Together, the procedure is meant to aid cell turnover. In plain English, you’ll like you’ve had a facelift, but you won’t have to suffer through the same extensive downtime.

If you Google vampire facial, you’ll find a lot of accounts that suggest you’ll be back to your normal lifestyle the next day. In my experience it varies from patient to patient, but it generally runs a bit longer than it does with the HALO. Despite what it sounds like, though, you shouldn’t feel more than a pin prick.

In a couple of years, we may be laughing at how over-the-top this all sounds. Research is just beginning to support all the reasons that, theoretically, this should be your go-to facial treatment.

What Do Your Lips and Mouth Say About You?

August 1, 2016 by Davis

It’s said that the eyes are the windows to the soul… they have the power to communicate how we feel without having to say a word. The mouth, on the other hand, is said to be the door to the heart. It is in a constant state of movement, whether we’re smiling, talking or puckering. Let’s face it: The lips get a lot of attention. So if yours aren’t quite where you want them to be, it’s definitely worth taking a look at today’s lip and mouth enhancement options.

Lip Size & Shape
You may have thin lips. One may be fuller than the other. Or you may have equally sized lips. Maybe your lips have changed with age. In any of these cases, if you’re looking to enhance or change the size or shape of your lips, you’ve got options!

Lip injections with dermal fillers is one of the most popular facial enhancement procedures today and for good reason. There are many filler options for lip enhancement, but there’s only one that’s been developed and FDA approved specifically for the lips: Juvéderm’s Volbella. It’s designed to deliver natural-looking, longer lasting results and it’s only available in select plastic surgeon’s offices across the country. We’re happy to say that we are one of them! Lip enhancement with injections is temporary, so repeat treatments are necessary to maintain your results, but downtime is minimal, usually just one day.

If you’re looking for more permanent results, there’s the implant option too. Because lip implants are inserted through the corners of the mouth, there’s a little more downtime involved, but the tradeoff with lip injections is that it’s a one-time procedure.

Mouth Aesthetics
It isn’t always just the lips that deserve a little attention. The area around the mouth and lips sometimes also needs some TLC.

Smoker’s Lines — Don’t like all those little vertical lines around your lips? They can be treated with fillers, laser resurfacing and Botox.

Drooping Mouth Corners — If the corners of your mouth droop downward, you can turn that frown upside down with the help of a little bit of strategically place filler. In some cases, Botox can also help by relaxing the muscles that may be pulling the corners of your mouth down.

Gummy Smile — If your smile reveals an excessive amount of gums, there’s a surgery for that. And it only takes around an hour. Not sure if you’re going to like the results? Not to worry: Dr. Davis can use Botox to show you what the results will look like before surgery!

Upper Lip Lift — If the skin between your nose and upper lift is too long, you can have it shortened with surgery. Excess skin is removed, leaving a small scar that’s hidden at the base of the nose. Just to make sure this is the treatment you’re looking for, Botox can be used first to give you an idea of what the surgical results will look like.

Awkward Fat? Get Rid of it in a FLASH

August 1, 2016 by Davis

Fat can turn up in awkward places: the side of the knees, the bra bulge on your back, in that area where the armpit meets the chest. Liposuction seems like an awfully big procedure for such a small concern. On the other hand, non-surgical fat reduction treatments could work, but you’ll have to wait for results. Isn’t there another option? The short answer is yes. Dr. Davis has a technique he uses to instantly get rid of small pockets of fat that give you grief. He calls it FLASH.

“With CoolSculpting you wait 4 to 6 weeks to see a result. With FLASH you literally suck the fat out and it’s gone,” says Dr. Davis.

FLASH stands for Fat Lipo Away Same Hour. It’s a superficial liposuction treatment that Dr. Davis uses to quickly and easily get rid of small pockets of fat. He sucks the fat out in minutes using a syringe and it’s done. No machine. No noise. Very gentle. Instant results.

FLASH is an in-office procedure that uses local anesthetic and requires only a tiny incision. In most cases you can go back to work the same day, so there’s no downtime and very little pain. In other words, you can get the gold standard fat eliminating results of liposuction with the downtime of a non-surgical treatment.

While FLASH is good for smaller areas, to do a very large area would take a lot of time, says Dr. Davis. Smaller areas include the braline, neck, area where the axilla (armpit) meets the chest, back and knees.

Surgical Trends for Summer

May 17, 2016 by Davis

It’s almost summer, but it’s not too late to get a little help to feel good and look great on the beach this year. Peaked your interest? We thought so! Check out these 3 cosmetic surgery procedures that will get your curves in all the right places…

1. Breast Augmentation

If you feel self-conscious in a swimsuit, uncomfortable in your clothes or if your breasts have changed as a result of pregnancy, weight loss or age, a breast augmentation may be just what the doctor ordered.

The fact is, there are many roads that lead women to breast enhancement. And we’ve got good news for every one of you: This is a procedure that provides results you can see immediately with only minimal downtime. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Bruising, swelling and discomfort for up to 2 weeks
  • Home from work for 2 to 3 days
  • Results immediate with continued improvement for up to a year!

Consult in May. Surgery in June. On the beach by July!

2. Liposuction

Do you have stubborn fat deposits that won’t go away with regular exercise and a healthy diet? Liposuction is the gold standard treatment for tummies, muffin tops, back fat, thighs, hips and more.

Liposuction is actually one of the two most popular surgical procedures every year for both men and women, according the annual statistics of the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. (Breast augmentation is the other!) Here’s what you can expect:

  • Swelling, redness and discomfort (and possible bruising) for up to 2 weeks
  • Home from work for around 3 days
  • Visible results in 4 to 6 weeks, with continuous improvement for up to a year

Consult in May. Surgery in early June. On the beach in July!

3. Brazilian Butt Lift

Butt lifts have become one of the fastest growing procedures in the past couple of years. Call it the Kardashian Effect or what you will, if you’re one of the many who wish they had a little more volume in out back, this could be your perfect summer solution.

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a procedure that adds volume and creates a lift of the buttocks via fat transfer, but implants for buttock augmentation are an option, too.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Swelling and discomfort for up to 2 weeks
  • Home from work for 1 week
  • Back to normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks (3 weeks for exercising)
  • Visible results once swelling dissipates

Consult in May. Surgery in early June. On the beach in July!

How can I prolong the beauty and youthfulness of my face?

March 21, 2016 by Davis

It’s a good question, and one that all of us who want to look good and feel good are likely to ask at some point in our lives. Thanks to modern technology, it turns out there’s a pretty simple way to slow down and even reverse the hands of time, as Dr. Davis explained earlier this month to iHeartRadio host Loraine Ballard Morrill.

Your Face in 3-D

The key to prolonging youthfulness is in understanding what happens to the face as it ages. It’s more than just lines and wrinkles that form. We age in 3-D. Deep down structurally, our facial bones can degenerate just like other bones in the body. On top of that, we naturally lose muscle and fat over time. Finally, it’s years of sun exposure we can blame for losing elasticity that we associate with youth.

Facial Fillers 101

Enter today’s facial fillers, specifically, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. These are made in the lab to mimic the HA that is naturally found in our own bodies. HA fillers come under various names — Restylane, Juvéderm, Voluma — and are very safe and effective for restoring the facial skeleton and volume loss. We’re literally using fillers to resculpt the face to more youthful contours, not just filling creases.

Common Filler Fixes

When your face changes with age, you notice:

  • Sunken or Hollowed Eyes
  • Laugh Lines
  • Thin Lips
  • Lips Lines
  • Flat Cheeks or Gauntness
  • Undefined Jawline or Chin

If any of these concerns strike close to home for you, give us a call. We’d love to discuss your options with you! 856.424.1700

Khloe’s Got Her Chin Up with Kybella: 5 Reasons You Should Too

March 21, 2016 by Davis

It’s got the potential to revolutionize our pursuit of perfection. So much so, it’s been called the next Botox. Recently Kybella even made Khloe Kardashian the face of their new Chin Up campaign. To note, this is about fat, not wrinkles. Curious about Kybella? This blog’s for you…

Kybella (deoxycholic acid, ATX-101) is the only injectable that is FDA approved to treat unwanted fat under the chin. This innovative technology was developed in a lab to mimic a natural molecule in our bodies that helps to breakdown fat. When Dr. Davis injects this into the chin area, it kills fat cells but, rest assured, doesn’t harm other skin cells in the area.

Still reading? Great! We’ve got 5 reasons you may want to consider Kybella treatment for yourself:

  1. Kybella is non-surgical.
  2. The treatment itself only takes 15 minutes and there’s little to no downtime.
  3. Treatment with Kybella does not hurt; nor will you be uncomfortable after treatment.
  4. Side effects? Outside of mild swelling, not really.
  5. Kybella has a 96% Worth It rating on RealSelf!

Achieve Your Beauty Resolutions in 3 Steps

January 15, 2016 by Davis

Did you set specific resolutions about your appearance this year? Chances are you did! But do you have a plan for achieving them? Unfortunately, Forbes reports that only 8% of people achieve theirs each year. But don’t worry… We can help! Just consider these 3 simple steps:

1. Make Your Goals Specific
Those generic, broad-scope resolutions to “lose weight” and “look younger” are likely a fast path to failure. If you make your goals more specific — “get rid of love handles,” “smooth out wrinkles,” “wear sunscreen every day!” — you’ll know exactly what you need to do and be more likely to take the necessary action to meet those goals.

2. Make Them Realistic
While a having a specific plan is a fantastic step in the right direction, it’s also important to consider how realistic it is.

  • “I want to look more rested.” Yes —Easily achieved with Botox or a brow lift.
  • “I want to look 25 years younger.” No — A facelift can turn the clock back by about 10 years. We’re not sure how you’d shave off 25…
  • “I want to lose a couple of inches on my thighs.” Yes — Easily achieved with lipo or CoolSculpting.
  • “I want to lose 20 inches all over.” No — Unfortunately, nothing in the plastic surgeon’s office is a weight-loss solution. There’s also a limit to fat removal, for safety’s sake.

3. Plan Your Budget
So what’s it going to cost… and how are you going to pay for it? Simple: First, you book your consultation to find out what exactly what amount you’re budgeting for this year. Second, you determine if you’re going to need financing options, such as those offered through CareCredit. Either way, we’re here to help, so just ask if you have a question or need any kind of assistance.

Happy New Year!

Weight Loss Inspiration

January 15, 2016 by Davis

It’s that time of the year when a significant number of Americans resolve to get healthy and lose weight. For those who have 100 pounds or more to lose, it often becomes a question of surgical options, such as gastric bypass. But surgery doesn’t always stop there, especially when the resulting weight loss leaves behind a whole lot of hanging, empty skin. Enter Dr. Davis.

“When people gain a tremendous amount of weight, the skin stretches out,” Dr. Davis told Prevention in a recent article. “Then when they lose that weight quickly, they’re left with loose, hanging, empty skin.”

This loose skin is often removed using some combination of body lift, leg lift, arm lift and breast lift procedures.

According to Dr. Davis, “As a general rule of thumb, each of these procedures ranges from $5,000 to $15,000.” Further, each procedure requires about 2 weeks of recovery and around 8 weeks before having another.

Yes, addressing skin issues can be a lot more expensive and time consuming than the initial weight loss surgery. However, patients who have going through the whole process will tell you that they’d do it all again to achieve their results.

For Dr. Davis’ patient Antoinette Liberati, choosing to to have post weight loss plastic surgery was part of her transformative process. “Once that [excess skin] was gone, I really felt like I had accomplished something,” she told the magazine.
